How to Care for Your Feet During Pregnancy

Comments (0)

PregnancyWe have many resources for pregnant women here in Richardson, TX and the surrounding communities. One of these is Natural Beginnings, a group of field-certified educators and practitioners who provide an array of services for women who are expecting. These professionals offer birth classes, lactation consultations, and can assist before, during, and after the birth of your child. Now, we may not offer the same services here at Richardson Podiatry Associates, but we can certainly help with foot care during pregnancy!

Naturally, you expect various body changes during pregnancy, but it’s easy to overlook and forget about your feet during this time. For this reason, we are sharing some foot care tips for pregnant women to keep in mind and reduce the effects and risk of issues like edema, heel pain, and varicose veins. These tips include:

  • Go shoe shopping. Unfortunately, the shoes you will be looking for aren’t “super cute” pumps or stilettos. Instead, you want comfortable, supportive models. During pregnancy, you put extra weight on your feet, so having the right footwear can make a big difference.

  • Go shoe shopping again. One of the physical changes you will likely undergo is foot growth. There are a couple of reasons behind this, but the important thing to note is that you might have to pick up some new shoes a couple of times as your feet become wider.

  • Exercise. We know you may not have an abundance of energy, but moving promotes blood flow, which can reduce swelling in the lower limbs. Even better is to go swimming or do aquatic exercises, since the outside forces provided by water decreases swelling.

  • Elevate and rest. This might seem to contradict the previous tip, but take time throughout the day to just relax and elevate your feet.

  • Hydrate often. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day will prevent both cramping and edema in your lower limbs.
