Foot Care Resolutions for 2016

Comments (0)

No matter how you are planning to celebrate the New Year’s Eve and Day here in Richardson, TX, you might be in the process of coming up with resolutions. These are often centered on physical health, with “exercise more” and “eat healthier” and “lose weight” all being popular options, but make sure you don’t forget about your feet as you set the coming year’s goals.

Too many patients come into our office seeking treatment for various causes of foot pain that could have been prevented. We can certainly treat these issues, but we would prefer to know that a patient didn’t have to suffer in the first place! Adding a few foot care resolutions to your list may help avoid pain and conditions that could limit your favorite activities.

Foot careHere are our top four habits to add to the list of resolutions you make for 2016:

  • Only wear shoes that fit correctly. A key part of foot and ankle injury prevention is to be sure that you choose footwear that is appropriate for the activities you perform. An equally important part, though, is to make sure your footwear fits correctly. This means avoiding shoes that are excessively tight, have high heels, or are too loose.
  • Clip your toenails properly. Too many cases of ingrown toenails develop on account of faulty trimming practices. Remember, your nails need to be clipped straight across and kept even with the edge of the respective toes.
  • Keep your feet dry. Avoid developing a fungal or bacterial infection by keeping your feet dry. When socks become damp or wet, swap them out for a clean, dry pair. Also, make sure the areas between the toes are dried carefully before putting on socks after showering or bathing.

Stretch daily. This is another injury prevention tip that can keep your calf muscles and Achilles tendons limber and reduce your risk of plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, and other common injuries. In addition to those, one of the top foot care resolutions is to come see us here at Richardson Podiatry Associates when you experience pain in your foot or ankle. Remember, foot pain is not normal, but rather an indication that your body needs help. Our Richardson, TX podiatrist office provides effective care so sore feet don’t get in the way of your life.
